The Kalana Mithuru Sewana at the University of Kelaniya inaugurated a new Open Book Corner on 23rd October 2025.
The ceremony was honored by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, who officially opened the book corner. Professor Mangalika Hettiarachchi, the first director of Kalana Mithuru Sewana, participated in the session as a special guest and delivered a speech.
The main objective of establishing the book corner is to provide students with access to positive-thinking books whenever they need. Additionally, plans are underway to conduct a bibliotherapy program in the near future, aimed at promoting well-being through reading.
The event was further graced by the presence of Professor M. M. Gunatilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; and Mr. K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, Registrar of the University of Kelaniya. Dr. Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Sciences, along with Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya of the department also attended the event. Additionally, several directors from other units, along with members of Kalana Mithuru Sewana, took part in the occasion.
This initiative reflects the University’s commitment to supporting student development and mental health through innovative resources.
A session on "Mental Well-being at the Workplace," organized by Kalana Mithuru Sevana, in partnership with the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science - Section F and the Committee for the Popularisation of Science (CPS), was successfully held on 10th October 2025 at the Auditorium of the Staff Development Centre, University of Kelaniya.
Dr. Manoji Harishchandra, Head of the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences, was the distinguished resource person for the session. Dr. Harishchandra delivered an insightful presentation addressing key aspects of mental health and well-being in the workplace, emphasizing practical strategies for maintaining a positive and healthy work environment.
The event received positive feedback for its relevance and informative content, contributing to the participants' awareness and understanding of mental well-being principles applicable in professional settings.
The event was attended by Dr. K. R. N. Harshani, Director of the Kalana Mithuru Sewana, along with the members of Kalana Mithuru Sewana; assistant student counsellors; and both academic and non-academic staff participated in the event.
A certificate awarding ceremony for Peer Counselors Batch 01 was held on the 25th of August 2023 from 10:00 a.m. onwards at the auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya.
In addition to the event, the Kalana Mithuru Sevana celebrated its 25th anniversary which started the centre in 1998. Further, on the same day the inauguration ceremony of Peer Counselor Batch 02 also took place.
The objectives of the event are to enhance students about peer counseling program and to avoid mental-related problems via training the students.
Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, and Professor Mrs. M. Hettiarachchi were the chief guests of the event. Emeritus Prof. Mangalika Hettiarachchi (Former Director and Founder of the Kalana Mithuru Sevana) enhanced the event as the keynote speaker.

The Preksha Meditation Tour in Sri Lanka, organized by the Department of Philosophy in collaboration with Kalana Mithuru Sewana, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on October 2, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya.
The program was graced by the presence of Prof. M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Prof. S. S. Weligamage, former Director of Kalana Mithuru Sewana; Dr. K. R. N. Harshani, Director of Kalana Mithuru Sewana; Dr. Manoji Harishchandra, Head of the Department of Philosophy; Dr Chamila Siriwardene, coordinator of the program and all respected heads of the departments, along with professors, doctors, lecturers, non-academic staff members, and number of students.
The highlight of the event was the meditation session conducted by three international trainers from Preksha International: Ms. Neelam Barmecha, Ms. Chetna Bapna, and Ms. Garima Hiran. The trainers guided participants through a one-hour session focused on relaxation, mindfulness, and self-awareness. The participants experienced techniques of breathing, concentration, and deep meditation, which fostered inner calm and mental clarity.
Meditation, as emphasized during the session, is not only a practice of calming the mind but also a path toward holistic well-being. It helps to reduce stress, improve focus, and nurture emotional balance, which are vital in today’s fast-paced and demanding lifestyles. The program inspired staff and students to embrace mindfulness in daily routines, marking an important step in fostering peace, compassion, and spiritual growth within the university community.
The musical program titled “Saṃvēdanā,” hosted by the Kalana Mithuru Sevana, was successfully held on the 11th of March 2025 at the K14 102 premises.
The event was designed to offer a relaxing escape from music, providing a relaxing experience for both staff and undergraduate students at the university. The program successfully brought together participants from both groups, fostering a sense of shared enjoyment.
The day began with a Guest Session by 𝗠𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆. With her strong background in marketing, branding, and digital media, Ms. Thareendra shared valuable insights on building a personal brand and developing a professional image. She emphasized 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. Drawing from her experiences in both the corporate and non-profit sectors, she encouraged students to focus on self-presentation, confidence, and networking, helping them understand how to make a lasting impact in their respective fields.
Following this, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗞. 𝗥. 𝗡. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶, 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗮 and Senior Lecturer in Library & Information Science, along with 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗮, conducted a session on mental well-being. Their discussion focused on the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.
The final session of the day was conducted by Temporary Lecturers Dinithi and Rupeshika, focusing on 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀. This interactive session helped students develop confidence, clarity, and engagement in delivering effective presentations. They covered essential techniques such as 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, ensuring that students are well-prepared to communicate their ideas persuasively in academic and professional settings.
With each session, students gained not only knowledge but also a deeper sense of confidence and belonging within the department. The ninth day was yet another step towards building a well-rounded, capable, and prepared student body.

The Research Library & Information Center of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, successfully organized the first session of the Learn to Learn Workshop Series under the theme “Get Involved: Your University Life and Career”. The workshop was held on 17th September 2025 at the K14 Auditorium, Faculty of Humanities.
The resource person for the session was Dr. K. R. N. Harshani, Director of Kalana Mithuru Sevana, University of Kelaniya.
The program was designed to guide undergraduates in making the most of their university experience while preparing for future career opportunities. Through this session, students gained valuable insights on balancing academic, extracurricular, and professional development activities to achieve holistic growth during their time at the University.
This workshop marked the beginning of a series of interactive sessions aimed at equipping students with essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes for their academic journey and career readiness.
